Shopify Fall ’26 – Growth goes exponential

As always, Shopify announced a new edition with a slew of new features, and as always, they put a huge focus on helping merchants grow. After the last few announcements, it’s no surprise that the Exponential Edition introduced AI upgrades, mainly to help brands reach customers in even more places. This time, however, they also introduced customer-facing features, along with some much-needed payment safety upgrades. Here are our favorite announcements.

“Everything new for non-linear growth” is the subtitle Shopify chose for its newest edition, the Exponential Edition, and we can understand why. This time, they didn’t just focus on Shopify itself; they also introduced more ways to connect other AI tools to Shopify and help merchants reach even more customers via Shop Pay. This is far from an exhaustive list of the updates; it’s more a collection of highlights that caught our eye at Color and Code:

  • More agents can connect to Shopify and Canvas, while Sidekick can use Markdown files to follow your store’s design preferences
  • Different catalogs and prices can now be scheduled, making seasonal sales like Black Friday much easier to handle
  • Shopify Protect is getting a huge upgrade, with more tools for fraud prevention and dispute handling
  • Shopify introduced an AI prompt and skill that customers can use to build their own personal shopper

More agents, much better “prompting”

More and more AI agents can build and manage Shopify stores, including ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini. What’s even more exciting from a site-builder perspective is that agents like ChatGPT and Claude can access Canvas to design stores. Sidekick can also use Markdown files to understand how a theme is built and follow brand-specific design preferences, like corporate identity guidelines. This can make updating online stores much easier while keeping them aligned with the brand.

Canvas itself also deserves a mention. Shopify now lets merchants edit their whole store in one view, zoom into specific details, and work with Sidekick to turn ideas into a custom design. This itself could make it much easier to see how changes work across the whole store while still fine-tuning the details. The new approach combined with added AI functionality makes designing and site-building much easier.

They also introduced some updates for Shop Pay, which is now available in even more agents. This is especially interesting because it lets shoppers buy from brands on or off Shopify through Claude Duet, Grok Bot, and Instinct. (ChatGPT is visibly missing; for Shopify’s agentic storefronts, it acts as a discovery tool, with purchases completed through the merchant’s checkout. OpenAI has separately partnered with Visa after retiring their own Instant Checkout, which might explain the different approach.)

More room to grow across borders

Another exciting announcement, especially for those in Europe like us, is that Shop Campaigns is expanding to over 35 new markets. This now includes countries across the EU, along with the UK and Australia. Shop Campaigns lets merchants run campaigns with a high level of automation and pay only when an ad drives a sale. The update also lets you run campaigns across borders simultaneously. From a growth perspective, this makes EU-wide expansion much easier, especially since most major European currencies are supported.

Small upgrade with huge effects

Catalog and price scheduling is an easy-to-miss update, but it can make merchants’ lives much easier, especially in the lead-up to Black Friday and the holidays. The feature allows sellers to schedule changes to product availability and pricing through catalogs, for example, to put selected items on sale. Combined with rollout scheduling, which can handle a specific Black Friday design or banner, this can support time-sensitive campaigns, and merchants won’t have to do everything manually on the day. Sounds minor, but it’s a big quality-of-life improvement.

Another great QoL upgrade is the introduction of folders for files in the Shopify admin. This also sounds small, but as a store grows, it becomes harder and harder to navigate its media library. Folders make this much easier.

Try before you buy

A surprising new way to attract customers is “store preview in agents,” which basically lets you build a custom Shopify store before signing up for the service. To do this, you need Shopify CLI, their command-line interface for working with Shopify stores. You can start building and previewing a store for your brand, then sign up for Shopify and keep what you’ve created when you’re ready to sell.

Payments will be safer

The update announced new features for the Shopify Protect app, with the rollout coming soon. Shopify says it automatically blocks high-risk orders before authorizing payment at checkout. The Protect upgrades also include AI features that supposedly help merchants “win more disputes,” along with custom fraud rules. This is a welcome addition to the Shopify ecosystem, because until now, the built-in protection was somewhat lacking, if we’re honest.

Focusing on buyers themselves

One interesting update targets customers directly, which is somewhat unusual. Shopify created a special prompt and skill to turn ChatGPT, Claude, or another agent into a personal shopping assistant. They published a downloadable shop.md so that users can create their own customizable assistant. This ties in nicely with their push to make stores and their payment solution available through agents, and it’s interesting to see they’re taking steps on the customer side too, alongside their focus on merchants.
